ONENESS AND DIFFERENCE IN PSYCHOTHERAPY

Started by David Brazier. Last reply by David Brazier Oct 4. 5 Replies

SHARING: SOME INITIAL POINTSRecently I was involved in a discussion about “oneness”. Clearly, to some people in the Buddhist world, oneness is a big number. However, it is not always that clear what people mean by this idea and it may be that…Continue

THE THERAPEUTIC ELEMENT

Started by David Brazier. Last reply by Juline Smit Sep 21. 3 Replies

When I originally learnt psychotherapy, psychoanalysis was the dominant force and its arch foe was behaviourism. Freud had claimed to offer the first scientific psychology. The behaviourists came along with what they claimed was really scientific.…Continue

INSIDE VIEW, OUTSIDE VIEW

Started by David Brazier. Last reply by David Brazier Sep 21. 10 Replies

Thinking about psychotherapy I notice that there is an important distinction to be made about two different viewpoints or perspectives. Similar comments can be made about spiritual practice and, no doubt, some other domains of human knowledge. I…Continue

THE WRONG EVIDENCE

Started by David Brazier. Last reply by David Brazier Sep 19. 7 Replies

There is a good deal of concern these days that psychotherapy should be “evidence based”. This has led to a neglect of, for instance, psychoanalysis. I cannot help thinking that this development is a mistake. When I think of the kind of…Continue

ZEN THERAPY ABILITIES

Started by David Brazier. Last reply by Juline Smit Aug 26. 4 Replies

I could have called this ZT Skills, but I don’t like the idea of reducing therapy to a set of skills, as though you could build it up like a set of lego bricks. Rather it is an art. To play music you might need certain abilities with a keyboard or…Continue

SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT ZEN THERAPY

Started by David Brazier. Last reply by Juline Smit Aug 26. 2 Replies

Buddhist Psychology has what we in the West might call behavioural, cognitive, humanistic and analytical aspects all together in a single system. In other words, it deals with all aspects of the process of internalising experience and turning it…Continue

THE AIM OF BUDDHIST PSYCHOLOGY

Started by David Brazier Aug 15. 0 Replies

In Buddhist psychology, the aim is somewhat different from most Western psychology. The latter aims to make the person self-assertive, self-sufficient, self-esteeming, and even self-entitled. This is expressed in such phrases such as “You deserve…Continue

CREATING LOCAL ITZI GROUPS

Started by David Brazier. Last reply by Mo Henderson Oct 31, 2018. 5 Replies

I just want to say that if you can get together three or more people to start a local ITZI group anywhere in the world, I am happy to offer what I can via skype, Facebook or e-mail to support it.Such groups can, amongst other things- discuss…Continue

PSYCHOTHERAPY: EVOLUTION OR DECLINE: The misuse of 'evidence'

Started by David Brazier. Last reply by David Brazier Aug 29, 2018. 4 Replies

I am at the Evolution of Psychotherapy Copnference in Anaheim, California. This conference attempts to showcase the best practice in psychotherapy. The presenters are exemplars for the profession and the information presented is intended to shape…Continue

BUDDHISM and TAOISM

Started by David Brazier. Last reply by Jan Wizinowich Aug 21, 2018. 1 Reply

It seems that Taoism had a considerable effect upon Far Eastern Buddism. Thus, consider the fact that Dogen Zenji had his great awakening upon over-hearing the words “Let body and mind fall away,” spoken by his master to another practitioner. Where…Continue

Sagesse féline...

Posted by Tamuly Annette on September 29, 2019 at 12:00 1 Comment

WEEP FOR OUR WORLD

Posted by David Brazier on August 20, 2019 at 21:38 2 Comments

At the moment I am feeling very sad for the state of the planet. As I write the great forests are being consumed by fire, both the tropical forest in Brazil and the tundra forest in Russia. The great forests are the lungs of the earth. I myself have lung problems. When there are parts of the lungs that don’t work anymore one can run out of energy. It can strike suddenly. We will probably not do anything serious about climate change or wildlife extinction…

MY MEDICAL CONDITION

Posted by David Brazier on June 26, 2019 at 18:04 10 Comments

My medical condition continues to be a mystery. It is clear that I do not have any of the big nasty things - brain tumour, cracked skull, stroke, etc - as these have been ruled out by MRI investigation. Nonetheless I continue to have persistent, continuous head pain that varies in intensity and I become exhausted by the least effort so that I am functioning like an invalid incapable of doing very much. There is always a possibility that the whole syndrome is a…

Grace.

Posted by Dayamay Dunsby on June 2, 2019 at 1:02 4 Comments

“Do we know what it means to be struck by grace? It does not mean that we suddenly believe that God exists, or that Jesus is the saviour, or that the Bible contains the truth. Grace strikes us when we are in great pain and restlessness. It strikes us when we walk through the dark Valley of a meaningless and empty life. It strikes us when we feel that our separation is deeper than usual, because we have violated another life, a life which we loved, or from which we were estranged. It strikes us… Continue
