Book of Daily Quotations from the Lotus Sutra

I have recently just published a book of daily quotations from the Lotus Sutra.  This may or may not be something of interest to folks in this group.  Perhaps though you might enjoy having this book by your practice space for encouragement from the Buddha in the Lotus Sutra.  The book is only in English, so please accept my…

Perfect and Sudden Concentration and Insight

I am in the process of writing a new book on the practice of Nichiren Buddhism and the Lotus Sutra.  What I'll be posting is my first draft, imperfect as it is.  What I post has been sent to my editor and trust me will be greatly improved by his wonderful work. I'm sharing here on the chance others may find something of value or something to correct of offer feedback on.  Let the reading of this not be an onerous task nor a task of anything less than joy.  The source material comes from…

Introductory Chapter I Lotus Sutra - Part 3: The Event

For now I am calling this section The Event, I may come up with a better title later on. To write this section presented me with not only the challenge of the name but I've also had to tackle the problem of what to suggest to you for your exploration. I knew what questions I was answering for myself, I simply was not sure, or confident about, what they might be for others. In…

Introductory Chapter I Lotus Sutra - Part 2: Who Was In Your Assembly?

One comment I hear from folks who attempt to read the Lotus Sutra is about the long listing of names at the very beginning. The list extends over two pages. Most of the people have asked what they were supposed to do with such a list. The names are weird, they are long, and frequently they are unpronounceable at least not in one breath or smoothly. Some have…

Introductory Chapter I Part 1: Leading Up to the Opening of Your Lotus Sutra

While written specifically about the Lotus Sutra, the questions posed here would be applicable to any endeavor, Buddhism included.

This chapter opens with the Buddha seated in meditation. As I think about this, I am reminded that we all began our practice of Buddhism from some place in our lives. Before our first exposure or our first…

WEEP FOR OUR WORLD

Posted by David Brazier on August 20, 2019 at 21:38 2 Comments

At the moment I am feeling very sad for the state of the planet. As I write the great forests are being consumed by fire, both the tropical forest in Brazil and the tundra forest in Russia. The great forests are the lungs of the earth. I myself have lung problems. When there are parts of the lungs that don’t work anymore one can run out of energy. It can strike suddenly. We will probably not do anything serious about climate change or wildlife extinction…

MY MEDICAL CONDITION

Posted by David Brazier on June 26, 2019 at 18:04 10 Comments

My medical condition continues to be a mystery. It is clear that I do not have any of the big nasty things - brain tumour, cracked skull, stroke, etc - as these have been ruled out by MRI investigation. Nonetheless I continue to have persistent, continuous head pain that varies in intensity and I become exhausted by the least effort so that I am functioning like an invalid incapable of doing very much. There is always a possibility that the whole syndrome is a…

Grace.

Posted by Dayamay Dunsby on June 2, 2019 at 1:02 4 Comments

“Do we know what it means to be struck by grace? It does not mean that we suddenly believe that God exists, or that Jesus is the saviour, or that the Bible contains the truth. Grace strikes us when we are in great pain and restlessness. It strikes us when we walk through the dark Valley of a meaningless and empty life. It strikes us when we feel that our separation is deeper than usual, because we have violated another life, a life which we loved, or from which we were estranged. It strikes us… Continue
