“Do we know what it means to be struck by grace? It does not mean that we suddenly believe that God exists, or that Jesus is the saviour, or that the Bible contains the truth. Grace strikes us when we are in great pain and restlessness. It strikes us when we walk through the dark Valley of a meaningless and empty life. It strikes us when we feel that our separation is deeper than usual, because we have violated another life, a life which we loved, or from which we were estranged. It strikes us when our disgust for our own being, our indifference, our weakness, our hostility, and our lack of direction and composure have become intolerable to us. It strikes us when, year after year, the longed for perfection of life does not appear, when the old compulsions reign within us, as they have for decades, when despair destroys all joy and courage.”

Thank you Dayamay. I like that idea of posession that you mention. When you are possessed by something you dissapear in a way or other, you allow that "something" acts through you...you become a vehicle, there is nothing else...

Yes I see what you mean. I think he means that grace happens despite ourselves, even as a by-product of humanness, foolishnes, etc. Grace is an energy that possesses us when we practice with genuine need and desire for salvation and contact with God, Buddha...whatever. Nice example with the dancing. I believe creativity is inspired.

Thank you Adam for this  which helps me  to think about Grace.  Maybe grace is the experience of being grasped by life instead of trying to grasp life in order to respond our expectations.

Really I was thinking in the grace of a dancer. I can only really dance when I give up my self conciousness apart and my trying to do it well, I mean, I really dance when I am totally inmmersed in the mistery of music, absorbed by it…Then grace is present.

And the same happens with a tennis player, a musician, an encounter in therapy, a contact with nature…I would say that grace is always present, we live in grace, but we are usually blind to it because our expectations and fantasies are covering Light.

Quote from Anthony De Mello:
“…in awareness you will understand that honour doesn’t mean a thing. It’s a social convention, that’s all. That’s why the mystics and the prophets didn’t bother one bit about it. Honour or disgrace meant nothing to them. They were living in another world, in the world of the awakened. Success or failure meant nothing to them. They had the attitude: “I’m an ass, you’re an ass, so where’s the problem?”

At the moment I am feeling very sad for the state of the planet. As I write the great forests are being consumed by fire, both the tropical forest in Brazil and the tundra forest in Russia. The great forests are the lungs of the earth. I myself have lung problems. When there are parts of the lungs that don’t work anymore one can run out of energy. It can strike suddenly. We will probably not do anything serious about climate change or wildlife extinction…
