"White Snow upon a silver plate" - things that seem similar are actually completely different. Counselling is not just ordinary conversation. Something more important is happening. As we become more experience we see the difference.
Warm Up Exercises
- exercises finding people with various common experiences. We are enlivened by finding people with experience in common with ourselves. We are attracted to such people. This can affect the counselling process. What a client is eager to talk about with one therapist might not emerge with another therapist.
Lecture including reflection on the demo session
- Initial remarks upon conditioning of the mind and upon object relations as a special case of the conditioning of the mind. We are all the time being influenced by the way we construe the objects, especially the people, around us.
- Reflections upon the counselling demonstration of yesterday.
(a) the client gave all necessary information, yet the therapist had not asked questions.
(b) the client clearly experienced many feelings but the therapist had not asked the client what he felt
(c) the client made progress in resolving a problem but the therapist gave no advice and did not engage in problem solving activity.
So what did the therapist do?
- First priority is to keep the primary object alive in the mind of the client.
- Keep track of secondary objects
- Keep track of clients energy level
- Notice detail and change in client's presentation
- Understand in the context of life tasks and the dilemmas and anguish (koan) they generate
- Allow your heart to be touched
- Allow the client to see how you are affected without losing your objectivity.
Therapist is touched by the position of the client specifically but does not lose objectivity since therapist also appreciates the position of other people in the scenario and also feels the client's situation as an instance of human life universally.
Question & Answer
We talked about how to develop empathy and the capacity for a heart connection by having a bigger perspective on life, by sudden awakenings of compassion, by getting psychologically alongside people and seeing into their world, by sensing the passion hidden behind the mask. We also looked at the transition from being in the therapy "bubble" - the safe space - and coming out into the conventional world - "When in Rome..." and also at having several different levels of awareness running at the same time such as having a central focus upon the person in front of one yet having a peripheral awareness of the dynamic of the whole group and, even, beyond that, a cosmic awareness of the universality of each situation. We talked about taking every opportunity to learn and expand one's familiarity with the many aspects of human life and trying to understand the motivations behind things. There is, for instance, no such thing as "mindless" violence: violence is always for a reason and the reason makes sense to the people who are being violent. We referred to the Boko Harem group and the fact that some of the young women "rescued" from kidnap have since gone back voluntarily to rejoin the group who captured them. We also referred to some of the situations described in the book Of Human Bondage by Somerset Maugham.
Names Exercise
A person's name is an important rupa which exerts and influence upon their life. We did an exercise of counselling in which the focal topic was this influence that the name had exercised in the life of the client. The exercise also allowed us to reflect upon the experience of being a counsellor.
Talk: Rupa
The term rupa is commonly translated as "form" which is a neutral term, but this is too weak a translation. The word rupa originally referred to an object of worship - hence Buddha-rupa. Extending this meaning to ordinary psychology we see that we "worship" many things - money, sex, chocolate and so on. Some of these things play a big part in our life while others are trivial. We take refuge in these things and trust them to help us what life is tough. Spiritual practice can be seen as substituting wholesome or holy rupas for the ordinary worldly ones. The holy rupas will not harm us whereas the worldly ones usually involve some harm. One's name is a powerful rupa. If one's name is spoken far away across a noisy room, one still hears it - one's ear pricks up. Although psychologically we might say that a person invests energy in the rupa and projects attachment on to it, the actual experience is more that of being seized by the rupa. In this sense Buddha talked about the world being on fire - one has to be careful not to get burnt. When one has been grabbed by a rupa it may take some effort to detach oneself.
We can see, therefore, that a life is conditioned by rupa and in the course of therapy the therapist gradually acquires a map of the significant rupas in the life of the client. It is by relating to these rupas that the therapist enters into empathy with the client and understands the configuration of his life.
