A time to let go, to offer oneself and receive peace. A sesshin is a spiritual retreat. Sesshin means searching the heart. This retreat is one of a set of five that form basic components of the Amida-shu system of spiritual preparation. Each retreat is repeated once every few years so that over a period it is possible for the practitioner to complete all five retreats. This particular sesshin is called Anshin. Anshin literally means “peaceful mind” or “heart at peace”, but is generally translated as “settled faith” because of the way the term is used in Pureland Buddhist literature. When one’s faith is settled one has a heart at peace. When one’s mind is not peaceful it is because one is confused about the fundamentals of life and so cannot give oneself to it in a wholehearted way.. In relation to Indian Buddhism, anshin corresponds to samatha, the practice of tranquil abiding. This retreat is suitable for persons at all stages of the path. There will be instruction and practice of the meditation and discussion of its place in Buddhism both formally and in daily life. There will also be times for sharing as a group and for private reflection. The retreat takes place in the suitably tranquil natural surroundings of La Ville au Roi in central France where one can commune with nature remote from the pressures of town life.
