Zen Therapy is an approach to personal growth and change rooted in Buddhist psychology. Personal life is a spiritual quest and each such quest involves overcoming obstacles. In Zen this is called working with one's koan. The word koan derives from the Chinese for a case – one is working on one's personal case, but the individual case is a reflection of a universal spiritual difficulty that takes unique form in the particular circumstances of a particular life. Working with one's koan, therefore, is addressing one's life drama. In classical Zen one does this alone sitting on one's cushion facing a wall. In Zen Therapy one mostly does it as part of an inter-personal process. Actually, even classically, nearly all the great masters experienced their most important break-throughs via the medium of meeting another person capable of throwing new light on their old problem.
In this four day experiential group we shall learn the practical wisdoms of this ancient approach and use them together. This is an opportunity for personal growth, spiritual development, and progress as a helping professional.
The course is run in conjunction with ITZI, the International Institute for Zen Therapy and carries credit for ITZI certificate and diploma programmes.
Zen is a Japanese tradition deriving from Chinese and Indian Buddhism. Therapy is a Western psychological art that takes its name from a Jewish sect that used to thrive in ancient Egypt and other parts of the Middle East. Eleusis, in France, founded upon an interest in the mysteries of classical Greece and the spiritual traditions of the world, has a mission to bring together the deeper spiritual understandings of many traditions and to do so in ways that benefit contemporary people. This is, therefore, a very suitable event for an early major programme at Eleusis.
David Brazier, doctor of philosophy, Buddhist teacher, head of the Amida Order, founder of the Eleusis centre, author of books on spirituality, psychology, culture and poetry, teaches in Europe, Asia and North America
