NEMBUTSU VERSES: Food for the heart

Feelings

changeable as the weather.

Namo Amida Bu -

the silver lining

in every cloud.

Working and resting,

like a turning wheel.

Namo Amida Bu,

the hub,

is always reliable.

Life is long

Life is short

Namo Amida Bu.

The Dharma

is indestructible.

Gazing at the moon,

my heart is touched.

Namo Amida Bu -

without effort

it carries me everywhere.

Circumstances

cannot be relied upon.

Namo Amida Bu:

the grace of Tathagata

never fails.

Every insight,

is an offering.

Namo Amida Bu -

Buddha’s open hand

puts peace in my heart.

What riches!

What poverty!

Namo Amida Bu

is enough

for contentment.

So many truths,

so many lies -

Namo Amida Bu

alone

is real.

Reading the scriptures,

bowing and praying,

Namo Amida Bu

is the candle

that never falters.

Studying and learning,

contrition and reform;

Namo Amida Bu

does the trick

in an instant.

Sitting zazen,

offering the world,

Namo Amida Bu!

Body and mind

fall away.

Born with faith

I never forgot.

Namo Amida Bu

lit my way

home.
