Q: What do the wisdom traditions say about equality?
A: Individual karma being unique in each case, it is self-evident that no two people come into the world identically equal in any respect. Therefore, to expect that competition between them shall be fair and just is invariably unreasonable. It follows that in a good society, the fortunate must help the less privileged. Such help, however, should not be such as to make people more dependent or redundant than necessary. The best help is the kind that empowers the beneficiary to him or herself make a positive contribution.
However, while worldly or social equality is a fiction, there is a more profound equality in the sense that God loves all, no matter how unequally endowed they may be. The Buddhas are thus. The Dharma rain falls upon all alike without discrimination, helping each to fulfil its unique potential.
