In the news today, Donald Trump has gone back on what he previously said about China being a currency manipulator and also gone back on his comments about NATO being obsolete. Last week he changed his position on Syria. The "reset" toward detente with Russia did not last very long at all. Politicians often change their minds when they actually get into power, but the degree of volte-face in this case is remarkable. Is anything left of the programme he was elected on? Has he really changed his mind or has he simply realised that he can only survive as president if he toes the traditional Republican line? His supporters voted for change - it seems they are not going to get it. Where does the anger go now that Washington is back to business as normal?

It is rather karmic to promise a revolution to the angry, the disillusioned, to the white supremacy mob; and use the power gained to further cement the status quo. I talked in an earlier post about directing hatred. Seems Trump has scored an own goal in a field of play he excels in.
There is another side to consider when trying to make sense of all of this- Trump is not the most careful of people regarding his own public behaviour. There must be many recorded transgressions that are beyond public acceptability and he may well be doing whatever it takes to keep such information out of the public sphere.
