NO CHANGE IN AFGHANISTAN

President Trump has now finally made his "important statement" on policy in Afghanistan, basically admitting that he hasn't a clue what could possibly work. He does not really want to send more troops because it costs money and even when Obama put 100,000 of them there it did not achieve much. He does not want to pull out because it will look like a victory for the Taliban and ISIS. He does not like the status quo because, as he said as a candidate, it is a quagmire.

He had to say something so has made it sound like there will be a new approach without actually giving any details. Essentially this is a fudge rooted in the fact that there is no solution from the American perspective. Britain and Russia have both tried to subdue the Afghans before now and failed. Before that the great conquerors of history including Alexander the Great and Gengis Khan all passed through, but the terrain is such that this is not country where an invading army can expect to have much more than fleeting successes. So, stalemate and no prospect in sight for an end to the bloodshed and waste. Oh what fools these mortals be.
