This retreat is one of a set of five sesshin that are basic to the practice of Amida-shu Dharma. This particular sesshin is focussed on developing a devotional attitude, that is on prayer, worship, homage, refuge and basic spirituality. This will be taught from an Amida-shu perspective but is sufficiently generic to be valuable to any person who wishes to develop a deeper spirituality in a non-dogmatic form. In this approach a devotional attitude plays a central role. In the context of modern secular society it is no longer possible to take this for granted. Learning the basics of a religious attitude is a foundation for well-being that many people have missed out on. On this retreat we will look at devotion from a Buddhist perspective. We will learn about prostrations, prayer, offerings, and devotion in ritual settings and in  ordinary life, as part of a personal spiritual path, as participation in a spiritual community and, fundamentally, as an expression of gratitude for the spiritual and other gifts that we have received. It will include fundamental practices of making offerings to myriad Buddhas, being in the presence of holy beings, orientation to sacred space, modes of prayer and devotional meditation,
