In the end there were three hedgehogs and we spent an amusing evening watching them interact with Tara the kitten. At one point Tara pounced on the boldest of the little hedgehogs and it shrieked. I thought that she had perhaps injured it, but it went on shrieking and advanced upon her and she backed off. I think she had got her paws pricked by the spines. It was soon apparent that the hedgehog had not suffered more than indignity. They are very amusing to watch, bumbling around.
