FRIDAY 18 Mar; Clifford the Buzzard

Skipping deer

The weather was really lovely today. Although it is still a bit chilly outside we can feel the strength of the sun. We have stopped making fires in the woodstove first thing in the morning. There are even hours of the day when it is much warmer outside the house then inside.

After breakfast I made a short round into the woods visiting a few of my favourite spots. I wanted to see if there are new flowers to discover. I walked a part of the meditation path into the sun-trap field. I enjoyed the new path Adam had cut out and the wonderful view over the landscape. A moment before I reentered the wood I saw a small deer skipping away. I follow my way past the Artemis shrine and walked towards the little Buddha Chapel. I checked a path full with small primula's but none of them were flowering yet.

Office in the garden

After my walk I created a little translation office in the garden for my self. I was sitting at one of the wooden tables outside the house with my laptop and dictionaries. I felt quite rich when I realised what my working space was look like: sitting in the sun, with a marvellous view over the garden and the fields, with birds singing spring-melodies.

Adams friend

When I looked around I saw, suddenly, Adam's friend Clifford sitting in one of the trees. Clifford is a buzzard who has decided that Eleusis is his home base too. Since a couple of weeks ago he has been showing up frequently. Adam started to talk first about the big bird with his white chest. Now that we are working and living more outside we all see this beautiful bird more and more. I started to call the Buzzard 'Adams friend' when I saw him, because he seems always to appear when Adam is working outside. I asked Adam if he knew a good name for the buzzard. A buzzard deserves a name. He is quite a personality. The way he circles around above Eleusis is quite impressive. And this morning he sat for a couple of hours in the dead elm tree with a view on the meditation hall. It looked as though he was meditating himself.

So I asked Adam if he could suggest a name for the buzzard. Adam needed only a few seconds to come up with the name “Clifford” and he said it with such a big smile on his face! Yes defenitly Clifford, Adams friend. Nice to have such a new community member at Eleusis.
