FRIDAY 27 NOV 2015 Speaking in Antwerp

This evening I am speaking on the topic Buddhism & the Brain.

Currently there is considerable interest in the dialogue between Buddhism and science, a dialogue that was originally begun by the Dalai Lama and has led to a number of very popular international conferences. More particularly, this dialogue has recently focussed especially upon Buddhism and neuroscience. Many people have great hopes that neuroscience can unlock some of the secrets of human nature and since Buddhism is one of the oldest systems of thought to offer comprehensive ideas about the nature of the mind, the dialogue between the ancient wisdom and the modern science is currently a lively area of investigation. As yet, neuroscience still has a long way to go, but, nonetheless, some of its findings are highly suggestive and offer interesting lines of thought for explaining or understanding or even enhancing some of the phenomena and practices that Buddhism has been looking into and practising for more than two millennia. The speaker is not a neuroscientist, but a Buddhist teacher interested in presenting the ideas of the Buddhadharma in a manner relevant to the contemporary world, who believes that the common popular notion of an opposition between religion and science is an unfortunate mistake and that the dialogue between them is potentially of huge value.
