FRIDAY 28 October ~ Second Day of Solitude

SECOND DAY OF SOLITUDE

Morning:

Oh, the chill!
Thick autumnal haze sharpened by a north east breeze;
brings a hint of Lapland,
but no reindeer in sight.

I light a low fire
to air the house
though cold is no enemy to me;
cousin of the dark, my old yin friends.

A gelid glint betrays the distant peeping
of the sun hidden in her celestial cave.
Peep out, my dear. Later she will emerge
and all will be forgiven.

Afternoon

At two the sun appeared and all grew light and warm.
Fallen leaves lie scattered on the lawn
and sit casually upon the empty garden chairs -
my tea break companions.

After my snack
a short siesta.
Is the cat getting more like me
or am I getting more like the cat?

Amrita vicrante gamini:
Immortality is getting longer!
One might as well be immortal here
for time has no beginning.
