THURSDAY 13 Oct ~ There's a Lot in the Bath

Wintery weather is upon us. Today it is wet and windy. We went in to town and did some shopping and everybody is wrapped up in big coats.

My main project recently has been building a bathroom in the barn. At this time of your it is not much usable because the barn is a drafty old place and it is too chilly. There are still a lot of problems to solve, not least that of plumbing. At present there is no water supply in the barn so one has to carry water from the house. However, despite all these primitive restrictions, I was very nice to be able to relax in a hot bath a couple of days ago. A bath is a very different experience to a shower.

Doing the necessary construction work has been an interesting challenge for me. My father was an expert with carpentry and I, as a young person, was hopeless at it and thereby earned a good deal of scorn from the old man. Doing this work has, therefore, also been something of a therapy for the wounds inflicted upon my psyche long ago. How we foolish beings hoard our hurts! And how hard we have to work to convert them!

When Elja came back she was rather surprised to see that a new room had been built in what had, when she went away, been a big open space.

  • The pied spider of Waimea!

  • A real treat. I felt deeply relaxed afterwards and also felt a surge of emotion at having got this far with the bathroom project. Sometimes practical tasks can be challenging at many levels all at once.
