WEDNESDAY 18 Jan ~ Déjeuner du roi

Tara the cat knocks on my door. It’s morning! She is full of energy after a night confined to the house. I let her out onto the frozen earth, white and crunchy under foot. I watch. She scampers high into the walnut tree and I cast cries of encouragement behind her. Above us, the half moon, white and crisp against the pale blue, indicates the direction of the sun, as yet hidden behind the eastern horizon of trees. I return to the kitchen.

Soon the coffee is ready. Steam rises from the porridge pot and from the jug of hot milk. Beyond it, the window is covered in seaweed frost etchings, now turning orange as the sun peeps over the horizon behind. It is January, perhaps the coldest week of the year, and on the window sill my geraniums are in flower.

On the table, honey, fruit, nuts, marmalade and  many other good things. This is la Ville au Roi and this is a déjeuner du roi. Enjoy the good things in life.
