WEDNESDAY 2 November ~ A walk by the lake

Autumn leaves not yet fallen
seem to float in mid-air
above the Lake of St Bonnet;
like the terraces of heaven.

Below them the fallen have turned brown,
while all in amongst there remains
a visual perfume
of delicate greens and yellows.

Overcome by beauty
my mind floats out across the lake
less purposeful than the kingfisher,
less poised than the beds of reeds.

Sit on the bench, enjoy
the melancholy desolation
of a tourist spot in winter;
the only passer-by a man with his dog.

Today the sun
did not put in an appearance
but I’m sure she will smile
now and again before spring.
