An introduction to Dogen Zenji and his times
 
Eihei Dogen is regarded as the founder of the Soto Zen tradition in Japan. An orphan, who became a Tendai monk at a young age, he became "the monk who went to China" where he was steeped in its religious and cultural traditions, primarily Buddhist, but also Taoist and Confucian.  Dogen is now regarded as one of the greatest Zen writers in history.  The seminar will cover the personal, cultural and circumstantial influences upon Dogen's work.

An introduction to the seminal essay Genjo Koan written by Dogen Zenji in the 13th century, a key text to understanding the Buddhism of that period and the Zen tradition to this day that is also relevant to practicioners of all schools of Buddhism.  Dogen wrote Genjo Koan on his return from China to set out his view of satori - spiritual awakening. This seminar will cover the main themes and images by which Dogen sought to convey the awakening experience that he had had when "body and mind fell away".
